Storing your avalanche beacon for summer

Writer's picture: LeeLee

Storing your avalanche beacon properly during the summer months is important to ensure that it remains in good working condition and is ready for use when you need it. Here are some steps to follow to store your avalanche beacon for the summer:

  1. Remove batteries: The first step is to remove the batteries from the beacon. Leaving the batteries in the beacon can cause them to leak, which can damage the beacon.

  2. Clean the beacon: Use a soft brush or cloth to remove any dirt or debris from the beacon. This will help to prevent any corrosion or damage to the beacon over the summer months.

  3. Store in a cool, dry place: Store the beacon in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Avoid storing the beacon in a damp or humid environment, as this can cause damage to the electronics.

  4. Check the beacon regularly: It is a good idea to check the beacon periodically over the summer months to ensure that it is still in good working condition. Check the battery compartment for any signs of corrosion or damage, and replace the batteries if necessary.

  5. Keep the beacon with the rest of your avalanche gear: Store the beacon with the rest of your avalanche gear, such as your shovel and probe, so that it is easy to find and access when you need it.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your avalanche beacon remains in good condition and is ready for use when you need it. Before heading back into the backcountry, be sure to test your beacon to ensure that it is functioning properly.
